What web access gives an AI assistant, and what it does not
An AI model knows only the text it was trained on, up to a cutoff date. An assistant with web access can search for newer information and put it into the answer. This helps with news, prices and documentation. It does not fix wrong readings of a page, weak sources or invented citations, so the answer still needs checking against the source it links to.
Ask 2 assistants about something that happened last week and you often get 2 kinds of answer. One is a confident guess. The other is a summary with links. Knowing which one you have changes how much you trust the result.

A model works from a fixed date
Training ends at a cutoff. After that, the model learns nothing new by itself. Asked about a later event, it either says it does not know or guesses from older patterns. The guess can sound just as confident as a correct answer.
What web access adds
With a search tool, the assistant turns your question into a query, reads the results and writes an answer from them. It can then cover news, prices, software versions, sports results and recent documentation. The answer should show the pages it used, so you can open them.
What it does not fix
Search does not make the model right. It can misread a page, take a weak source at face value, mix 2 sources into 1 claim or attach a link that does not support the sentence. A citation shows where to check. It is not proof that the check will pass.
How to tell if an answer used the web
Look for links, page titles or dates in the reply. Ask directly whether it searched, and ask which pages it opened. A reply that names a recent fact with no source and no date is worth doubting, even from a tool that has search.
A test that takes 3 minutes
Ask about something that happened in the last few days. Then ask for the source and open it. Check that the page exists, that it says what the answer claims and that the date is recent. Repeat with a question whose answer never changes, and see whether the tool wastes a search on it.
Privacy and when to switch it off
A search sends words from your question to a search service. For a private question, that is a second party seeing part of it. For stable knowledge, such as how a law of physics works, search adds nothing and can add noise. Use it for facts that change.
What people ask before switching
Does an assistant without search know today's date?
Not by itself. Some tools pass the date into the conversation. Without it, the model can only guess the date from its training.
Can search be added to an assistant?
Developers can connect a search tool to a model through an API. A person using a chat page depends on what the service has built in.
Are the cited links always correct?
No. Open the link and read the passage. A link that exists can still fail to support the sentence beside it.
Is web access always better?
No. It helps with facts that change and adds little for stable knowledge, writing or code.
Ask about something from this week, then open the source and check it.
